How To Fix iPhone Error 3194 With Hosts File

Error 3194 often occurs when iTunes on your computer can't connect to Apple's software update server. This is usually caused by an unsigned or expired firmware used during iOS update and restore, or a network connectivity issue on the computer.

The first way you can use is to edit the hosts file on your computer to make sure iTunes can communicate with Apple's update server. Here are the specific steps:

STEP 1 Make sure iTunes is stopped on your computer (Widows/Mac).

STEP 2 Open the host files on your computer:

  • For Windows PCs : c: windows system32 drivers etc hosts

  • For Mac: Open a terminal, enter this command and click Return: sudo nano/private/etc/hosts/etc/hosts

STEP 3 Open the hosts file as an administrator.

STEP 4 Copy "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com" to the last line of the Hosts file. Then » Save the file.

iTunes

STEP 5 Connect your iPhone to YOUR PC via USB cable and open iTunes.

STEP 6 Put your iPhone/iPad/iPod into DFU mode by turning off the phone and then holding down the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release. Power button, but hold down the Home button until iTunes tells you that the device is in recovery mode.

STEP 7 In recovery mode, you can restore your iPhone. However, iPhone restore will erase all the data on your iPhone, so make sure you've ever backed up your iPhone using iTunes or iCloud.

STEP 8 After the iOS update is complete, go back to the hosts file and delete the line "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com" again so that iTunes can update normally as usual. This is an important step, otherwise you may encounter errors in the future when trying to update or install iOS versions.

What if you're still getting error 3194 or another iTunes error?

If you still see an iTunes 3194 error after adding "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com" to your hosts file, or if you get an error from the new iTunes, you'll go back and add a "#" and a space ("#") before writing gs.apple.com. By adding "#", you invalidate the IP string gs.apple.com. For example, if you see the string: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com. Add a "#" to turn it into:

# 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Then save the hosts file and restart the computer. After restarting, restore or update your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch using iTunes as usual.

Check the network connection on your Mac or PC

In addition to modifying the host files to fix error 3194, you can also stop error 3194 by changing the network settings on your computer.

  • Make sure your computer can connect to the Internet. Otherwise, restart your computer and modem, or contact your network provider.

  • If you're using a wireless router, try using an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to your modem.

  • Temporarily uninstall the security software on your computer.

If none of the above methods can fix the unknown error 3194, you can use iOS Recovery system to restore or update your iPhone without iTunes
